About Steven Joyner:
Steven is a E-RYT200 and has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since 2006. He draws upon this experience as he explores teaching and sharing the love of this intense practice with new and experienced Ashtangis alike. Steven also teaches Hatha Flow and Children’s Yoga with a focus on safety and injury prevention, rejuvenation, and self-exploration. He provides modifications and variations to make Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga both accessible and challenging to practitioners of all levels.

Steven honors the tradition of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by him Mike Mathews, Mathew Sweeney, David Swenson, and many others, following in the lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. He combines his deep respect of the Ashtanga tradition with pragmatic adaptability to keep the body, heart, and mind healthy and connected. On and off the mat, Steven values continual learning, authenticity, and compassion for all beings, including ourselves.

About Christine Anderson:
Christine is originally from Chicago and has since made her dwelling in Austin, TX. She has always been an athlete engaging in a wide variety of sports and it wasn’t until she discovered yoga in 2007 that she began to feel a sense of peace and joy enter into her life. For several years yoga was a purely physical practice, and eventually it began to deepen, open up, and transcend the physical. Christine maintains a super active lifestyle with a strong love for life, a passion for adventure, and a daily dose of Ashtanga Yoga. In her classes she loves to let her passion, joy, and enthusiasm radiate to her students, providing them with a nurturing love to support whatever stage of life they are in, ranging from beginner to seasoned yogi.

Yoga is yoking oneself to the deeper self and this bliss comes by entering the present moment through the breath. That yogic philosophy is embodied by her daily practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois said, “Practice and all is coming.” Through this vigorous practice we connect to our breath, calm the mind, and go within, bringing forth deep transformation.

Christine is a E-RYT200 and has had the privilege of studying with David Swenson, Leslie Kaminoff, Chase Bossartt and Raghunath. Christine also teaches Vinyasa, Hatha Flow and Children’s yoga!

About Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Ashtanga Yoga:

Ashtanga Yoga:

Short Description:
Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. (from ashtanga.com)

Ashtanga yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga,” as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices:

Yama [moral codes]
Niyama [self-purification and study]
Asana [posture]
Pranayama [breath control]
Pratyahara [sense control]
Dharana [concentration]
Dhyana [meditation]
Samadhi [absorption into the Universal] (Scott 14-17) (from (ashtanga.com/html/background.html)

This forms the practical and philosophic basis of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. (from (kpjayi.org/the-practice)

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois:
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (July 26, 1915 – May 18, 2009), or Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, counts amongst the world-renowned yoga teachers of India. A student of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, he taught at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute of Mysore, founded by him, until his death in 2009 . His yoga shala attracts thousands of foreign students every year. (from www.iloveindia.com/spirituality/gurus/sri-k-pattabhi-jois.html, in part)
